Justification

What has been written down.

Six fields are required of every node. Empty ones are shown as declared gaps — a gap means nothing has been written, not that there is nothing to write.

Definition

Comment

Shared belief and practice complexes organised around sacred or ultimate concerns, including the institutions and community structures that maintain, transmit and regulate those beliefs and practices.

Inclusion

Comment
  • belief and practice systems organised around sacred or ultimate concerns
  • religious institutions and leadership structures
  • ritual and community practices that reproduce the system
  • membership and affiliation structures, including non-theistic groups

Exclusion

Comment
  • laws, rights and regulations governing religious practice — goes to legal
  • individual moral philosophy not embedded in a belief-practice community — lens ethics
  • political movements merely using religious rhetoric — goes to political

Sources

Comment

Declared gap No sources have been cited.

Boundary cases

Comment
  • Religious law such as canon law or sharia within a state system can be both. The normative-religious system is treated as religious, and its state-enforced codification as legal.

Uncertainty

Comment
  • Including non-theistic affiliation structures makes the inclusion criterion hard to bound. If shared practice around ultimate concerns is sufficient, it is not clear what excludes a sports team or a political movement.

Rules

Whether this division survives the six rules.

Rules 1, 5 and 6 are checked by the validator and reported here. Rules 2, 3 and 4 are judgements about meaning and cannot be automated — no state is claimed for them. The rules themselves are set out in the method.

Rule 01

At most seven

Not applicable. This node is not a division.

Rule 02

Mutually exclusive

A judgement about whether the parts overlap. Not automated.

Not checked
Rule 03

Collectively exhaustive

A judgement about what the parts leave out. Not automated.

Not checked
Rule 04

Equal abstraction

A judgement about whether the parts answer the same question type. Not automated.

Rule 05

Decomposable or terminal

No children and not marked terminal — unfinished, rather than an endpoint.

Warning
Rule 06

Justified in writing

5 of the six fields carry content. The rest are declared gaps.
